After leaving Castle Mountain Junction, we headed
South through Kootenay National Park towards the resort area of Radium.
Radium is famous for two things - its golf course and Hot Springs. There
are lots of motels and hotels in Radium and camp grounds close by if you
wish to stay overnight.
Remember, you are traveling through National Parks in the mountains.
You must be prepared for temperature extremes (snow is a potential at
the passes any time of the year but doesn't happen frequently). Check
the weather forecast before heading out and be prepared! Animals can be
everywhere. On a bad day you won't see a single animal, on a good day,
you'll see Elk, Deer, Moose, Bear, Coyotes and lots of birds.
But now, back to the pictures and the ride:
|
You can see a few of the cars ahead. As well, the weather has
turned a bit cloudier. Because of the number of passes you ride
over, you can be in and out of sun and rain a number of times,
depending upon what's happening with the weather.
|
The top of Sinclare pass, looking North along the route you've
just traveled. The rider can "sorta" be seen in the
rear view mirror. Although this is a pretty picture, it is just
that much better in the sunshine!
|
Still at the top of Sinclair pass, looking across the valley!
|
|
We are just getting close to Radium. This part of the road has
been blasted through solid rock. As a bicyclist, this is
fantastic going down and you are looking for a spot to pass slow
moving traffic!
|
You can see the rocks we are riding through. The road is narrow
and if it has rained recently will stay wet for some time as
there isn't a lot of sun that gets in here. This is another
great spot to stop at and look at stuff.
|
We've now gone through Radium and are heading up highway 95
towards Golden. With a decent range, you can make Radium from
Calgary but by now you'll have to fill up if you haven't done so
yet.
|
|
A little bit of lean angle as we go around a corner.
|
We've passed through Golden and are now heading East on the
Trans-Canada highway. You are now back into traffic.
|
Those corners. You ache to really ride them but you are trapped
behind traffic - what to do. SIMPLE, slow way down, let the
traffic go ahead and then accelerate through the corner, catch
up and repeat. This stretch has a double yellow - don't pass
(don't ask me how I know).
|
|
Long road downhill and equally long uphill. The uphill sections
have passing lanes but then everyone tries to pass one slow
moving truck. Trucks go slow up AND down.
|
See, slow down, then accelerate over the bridge and around the
corner up the hill.
|
As we continue and get close to Field, B.C., there is a stretch
of road with a very long passing lane on an uphill stretch.
